Harmonious Piano Care: Tips for Lasting Brilliance

Ensure your piano stays in harmony with these essential care tips. From dust to sunlight, we’ll help you protect your instrument’s sound and shine. Let’s keep those keys playing beautifully for years to come!

Keep Dust at Bay

Dust can play a sour note on your piano’s performance, settling on surfaces and sneaking into moving parts like keys, dampers, and hammers, causing them to stick or slow down. When your piano isn’t in use or you’re expecting guests, keep the lid and covers closed to extend the time between major cleanings. This simple step helps your piano stay in perfect pitch, inside and out.

Clean with Care

Choosing the right cleaner depends on your piano’s finish, so let’s not miss a beat. For traditional lacquer finishes we only recommend Guardsman Furniture Polish—it contains no silicone or waxes, plus it has UV protection to prevent fading. Avoid silicone-based products, like Pledge and others. For high-polish polyurethane finishes, clean with Windex, then use a premium car polish to effectively remove swirl marks; always opt for a 100% cotton cloth to prevent scratches, and avoid spraying cleaners directly on keys or strings to protect against moisture damage, such as string rust.

Shield from Sunlight

Direct sunlight and its heat can wreak havoc on your piano’s tune and fade its finish faster than a staccato beat, especially on lacquer models needing refinishing to restore color—while polyurethane finishes have no fix whatsoever. Protect your instrument by closing curtains, using shades, or installing UV-protection on window glass. This keeps your piano sounding and looking as vibrant as the day you first played it.

Avoid Vents for Better Tuning

Temperature and humidity will throw your piano out of tune quicker than an off-key melody, so steer clear of heating or AC vents. If placement near a vent is unavoidable, close it off or redirect the airflow to maintain a stable environment. This small adjustment ensures your piano’s notes stay sharp and true.
